A leaf out of the LAPD

Bangalore: What does the Los Angeles Police Department have in common with the Dakshina Kannada Police Department?

Karnataka's men in khaki have taken a leaf out of the LAPD policing books to start their official blogs.

The first of its kind blog, launched last year, is especially popular among the NRIs and has registered more than 10,000 page views so far.

"The initial purpose was to make available official information to the local media, to ensure equitable and fair distribution of crime-related news, over a period," Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada District, B Dayananda, says.

The blog has it's managed to do just that.

With features like a daily bulletin on crime status of the district, all the reported FIRs, unnatural deaths and missing persons, the blog has certainly made policing more transparent.

"I do not have to be in my office to do so. I can even update it using my mobile phone. Officers e-mail their reports to the computer section in my office. They in turn save it in draft format on the blog. I go through it and approve it for publication with changes if necessary," Dayananda says.

The information is available both in English and in Kannada.

Infact, such is the success of this blog that the neighbouring Udupi police department has also got inspired enough to start its own online diary.

With this initiative, the Dakshina Kannada police have certainly paved the way for IT-driven policing.

Good job.
keep up the good work.
We are proud of you even though i am from mumbai but atleast your initiative
will give others "COPS,Etc" inspiration, than lateron it's up to them whther they continue updating futher.
